Woman in massive fraud: GH¢278,000 involved

A female staff member at the Western Union desk of the Ghana Post in Kumasi has been arrested by the police for allegedly embezzling GH¢278,000.

Louisa Osei Agyemang, 24, an assistant postal officer, was said to have embezzled the amount between January and December, 2009.

She was arraigned before the Kumasi Circuit Court yesterday charged with stealing.

The accused is to re-appear in court on September 22, 2010.

Police sources told the Daily Graphic that Louisa was a teller at the Western Union desk of Ghana Post at the Suame branch and that anytime a customer went to withdraw money, she inflated the amount and pocketed the difference.

This was said to have gone on undetected for the entire period until she was transferred to the Adum branch some three months ago.

According to the sources, the accused person further colluded with people who used fictitious identity cards to collect money from Western Union.

They said this went on for sometime until a recent audit of Western Union accounts at the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) branch in Kumasi, when the fictitious deal was detected at the Ghana Post end.

The matter was reported to the management of Ghana Post who, in turn reported it to the police and she was accordingly arrested.
