Ten female workers of the Texas Casino in Tema escaped death narrowly when the Urvan bus on which they were travelling got trapped under a tipper truck.
For more than two hours the passengers were trapped under the trailer of the tipper truck fully loaded with sacks of fertiliser.
The workers were travelling from Tema to Assin Fosu to attend a colleague's engagement ceremony.
The driver's mate on the Urvan bus also survived the accident, but the driver, identified as Osa Mensah, lost his life.
The accident occurred at Assin Atobiase at about 6.30 am on Saturday when the DAF tipper truck which the Urvan bus was following failed to successfully climb a hill and reversed uncontrollably, falling on the Urvan bus in the process.
Eyewitnesses told the Daily Graphic that the driver of the Urvan bus, with registration number GN 1273-09, had noticed that the tipper truck had a problem climbing the hill and he therefore, parked the bus at the foot of the hill for safety, waiting for the tipper truck to ascend the hill.
The police and officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) had to organise a lift from the BRM Wood Company to lift the trailer from the Urvan bus after the Ghana National Fire Service had failed to respond to distress calls.
The injured were rushed to the Assin Fosu St Xavier Hospital, where they are responding to treatment.
Musah Chaliba, a mechanic who was on the tipper truck when the accident occurred, said the truck, which was travelling from Tema to Obuasi, had earlier developed a fault on the Accra-Tema Motorway and so he had been called from Kumasi to work on it.
Two of the injured whom the Daily Graphic spoke to said they were grateful to God for saving their lives.
