President John Evans Atta Mills has appealed to Ghanaians to be patient in their expectations because he will deliver on his Better Ghana promise.
He said results are beginning to show that the nation is on the right path to the Promised Land and that Ghanaians will be their own judges why he and the ruling National Democratic Congress will deserve another term in office.
In an exclusive interview with Nana Kwabena Bobie Ansah, host of Asempa FM’sEkosii Sen programme, the president spoke on a variety of issues and said the government has had to work very hard since assuming office to address development challenges and he was sure the hard work is paying dividends.
He praised the fortitude of Ghanaians, observing also that majority of the people bear good thoughts for the nation and urged all to support national development efforts rather than being self-seekers. He said if the nation as a whole developed, it will reflect on all in the country.
President Mills spoke against backbiting, loose talk and misconduct and negative influences and said in particular, children learn by observing and as such adults must teach them to be God-fearing, respectful, truthful and love one another.
Asked if he thought he was leading the nation on the path to the Promised Land, President Mills said he is impressed with what he sees so far, arguing also that the early years of any government, including those who preceded him, were no different from his.
He said one must learn to walk before attempting to run and that when his government assumed power, it was not as though there were some goodies gathered already for distribution. He was confident in the steps taken so far to grow the nation, maintaining that it will soon be harvest time.
Speaking on revenue agencies, President Mills promised the government’s resolve to support them in their work, underscoring the importance of tax revenue for national development. His only regret though was that many a Ghanaian who complain most when lights go off or water supply is disrupted are those who may not be paying any bills at all. Others import goods but instead of paying taxes, they prefer to pay bribes and deprive the nation of deserving revenue.
Touching on the Tema Oil Refinery fracas and claims that he had directed TOR to source its own supplies, President Mills said he had rather written to some suppliers in Nigeria to supply oil to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation. He said he had also talked about TOR procuring its own crude, however what he said was that a gradual process was to lead to that development.
