Dankyira: Seven arrested as calm returns

Seven people have been arrested in Dankyira near Weija in the Greater Accra Region following clashes between some land guards and a group of sand winners on Tuesday March 23.
Three people, including two chiefs and a fetish priest, lost their lives during the clash while one person is said to be seriously injured.

Stores and other properties were also vandalized. A Brother to one of the deceased chiefs, Emmanuel Allotey Pappoe, earlier told Citi News that a fight ensued between some land guards and a group of sand winners at a site for sand winning.
He said some of the men who fought at the sand winning site later went to the house of his brother and without provocation gunned down his brother and the other two deceased persons.

Sand winning is a major source of livelihood for residents in the area and land guards are mostly employed to protect the interests of local entrepreneurs in the business.
Meanwhile, calm has since returned to Denkyira, according to the Weija Police Commander.
ASP Kwame Afari in an interview with Citi news said the clash was between two rival factions in the community.
He said investigations have begun into the incident, adding that seven people have been arrested and taken to the Weija district Police headquarters for interrogation.

“Those we have arrested, we have taken them to the Weija district police quarters and we are yet to ask them questions. We have arrested seven now,” he said.
He, however, asked fear stricken citizens who had fled the area to return since calm had been restored to the area.
